The Quest to Reclaim Lost Title for a Classic Motorcycle: A Restoration Journey
It began with a chance encounter. A few years ago, I happened upon an old classic motorcycle in a dusty corner of a garage in rural Missouri. It was love at first sight. I knew I had to have it.
After some extensive research, I was able to trace the history of this particular motorcycle and determined that it was a 1971 Honda CB750 K1, affectionately known as the SuperSport. The SuperSport was one of the most iconic motorcycles of its era and has since become a highly sought-after collector’s item.
The only problem was that the motorcycle had no title. Without a title, it would be impossible to register the bike and ride it on public roads. I knew that I had to find a way to get the title for this classic motorcycle.
My mission for the next several months was clear: I would reclaim the lost title for my SuperSport, no matter what it took.
The journey began with an arduous search for documents. I scoured county records, visited state offices, and made numerous phone calls in hopes of finding information about my motorcycle’s title. After many weeks of searching, I finally found some original paperwork from 1971 that identified my bike as being registered in Missouri. With this information in hand, I submitted an application for a duplicate title to the state and waited anxiously for their response.
When the response finally came back, it was not what I had hoped for: my application had been denied due to insufficient documentation. It seemed that all hope was lost until I stumbled upon a solution: vintage vehicle registration laws in Missouri allow historic vehicles (over 25 years old) to be registered without titles if they have been deemed “roadworthy” by a certified mechanic.
I quickly enlisted the help of a mechanic friend who specializes in vintage vehicles to inspect my SuperSport and certify it as roadworthy. After passing inspection with flying colors, we submitted an application for registration and eagerly awaited their response.
This time around, our efforts were rewarded: the state approved our application and issued me with a new registration plate and title! After months of hard work, my beloved SuperSport was officially roadworthy once again!
The experience of restoring this classic motorcycle has been immensely rewarding for me; not only did I get to experience the satisfaction of bringing an old machine back to life, but also reclaiming its lost title gave me peace of mind knowing that my SuperSport is now legally registered and safe to ride on public roads once again!
